Vienna announces new street and square names honoring cultural icons

The City of Vienna has announced a series of renamings and new designations for streets, squares, and parks to honor various international and local figures. Notable international honorees include singer Tina Turner, who will have a promenade named after her in Donaustadt, and primatologist Jane Goodall, honored with a street in Seestadt Aspern.

In the realm of Austrian culture, the city is naming locations after prominent theater and film personalities, including Otto Schenk, Elisabeth Orth, Peter Simonischek, and Waltraut Haas. Other designations include a path for entertainer Peter Rapp and a park for Gerald Pichowetz.

The initiative also focuses on historical commemoration, specifically honoring women who resisted or were persecuted by the National Socialist regime. This includes Käthe Sasso, Ruth Langer, and Lore Segal. Additionally, the city continues to use supplementary plaques on street names, such as for Karl Liebknecht, to provide historical context and prevent the loss of nuance in public memory.
