Vienna begins redesign of Ringstraße starting at Schottenring

Construction has begun on the redesign of Vienna's Ringstraße, starting with a 700-meter section of Schottenring between Schottentor and Franz-Josefs-Kai. The project aims to separate bicycle and pedestrian traffic to reduce conflicts in areas that are currently narrow and confusing.

As part of the first phase, the side lanes will be converted into a two-way bicycle path. These paths will feature sand-colored asphalt, a design choice intended to reference the boulevard's history as a former riding alley. The side lanes will be largely closed to car traffic to accommodate this change. The first stage is expected to be completed by summer 2027 at an estimated cost of 5.7 million euros.

The broader redevelopment plan, which is scheduled to continue through 2030, involves transforming side lanes into cycling paths across various sections of the Ring. The project also includes the addition of green spaces and seating areas to improve the urban environment.
