Vienna reports record startup growth amid political scrutiny of Chamber of Commerce

Vienna has reached a historic milestone in entrepreneurship, with 6,106 new companies founded in the first half of 2026. This represents an 8.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, the highest half-year figure recorded since 1993. The capital's growth rate significantly outpaces the national Austrian average of 2.8 percent, with Vienna accounting for approximately 26 percent of all new business formations in the country.

Simultaneously, the FPÖ Wien party has launched a critique of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce's spending. Party representatives Udo Guggenbichler and Gerald Zmuegg have called for increased transparency and cost-cutting measures regarding the use of membership fees. Specific criticisms include the expenditure of approximately 600,000 euros for an office for former president Walter Ruck, as well as a significant rise in annual PR and marketing costs, which grew from 64,000 euros in 2015 to nearly 976,000 euros in 2024.
