Vienna commemorates 88th anniversary of November Pogroms
Christian and Jewish organizations in Vienna are organizing the “Mechaye Hametim” memorial series to honor the victims of the 1938 November Pogroms. The commemorations include an ecumenical service at the Ruprechtskirche on November 9, followed by a silent march to the Judenplatz memorial.
During the November Pogroms, synagogues, Jewish businesses, and homes were destroyed throughout German-occupied territories. In Vienna alone, 42 synagogues and prayer houses were destroyed, leaving only the Stadttempel. Approximately 5,447 Viennese Jews were arrested, with nearly 4,000 deported to the Dachau concentration camp.
The memorial program also features cultural events, such as a book presentation at the Otto-Mauer-Zentrum regarding the biography of composer Hilde Loewe.
