Vienna considers new ‘Kultureuro’ levy on cultural event tickets

The City of Vienna is considering the introduction of a new levy on cultural event tickets, tentatively named the ‘Kultureuro’. The initiative, proposed by Cultural Councilor Veronica Kaup-Hasler, aims to generate revenue to support and sustain the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

While specific details are still being developed, officials are evaluating different models, such as a flat one-euro fee per ticket or a percentage-based surcharge of approximately 12.5 percent. The exact scope of the levy—including which specific events, institutions, or ticket types (such as discounted rates) will be affected—remains undecided.

The proposal is modeled after the ‘Sportgroschen’, a levy on sports tickets that has been in place in Vienna since 1948. Further details regarding the implementation and final structure of the Kultureuro are expected to be announced in the autumn of 2026.
