Vienna court begins murder trial for 2018 killing of Jennifer Scharinger

The murder trial of 33-year-old Mairon K. has commenced at the Vienna Regional Court regarding the 2018 death of 21-year-old law student Jennifer Scharinger. The defendant, who previously confessed to the killing and led police to the victim's remains in a restricted military training area, faces a potential sentence of ten to 20 years or life imprisonment.

Scharinger disappeared from her apartment in Vienna-Brigittenau in January 2018 following a dispute with her partner. While initial investigations into the ex-boyfriend were closed in 2019, the case was reopened after the victim's mother, Brigitta Scharinger, used a fake dating profile to engage the suspect in chat, leading him to provide details about the crime.

A psychiatric evaluation has described the defendant as having a combined personality disorder, characterized as narcissistic, explosive, and unstable. Prosecutors are requesting his placement in a forensic-therapeutic center, citing a high risk of recidivism without such measures. Feminist organizations are holding a vigil at the court during the proceedings.
