Vienna culture: Music Theatre Awards and Lion King premiere

The 14th Austrian Music Theatre Awards were held at the Votive Church in Vienna. Key honorees included soprano Anja Silja, who received a lifetime achievement award, and Markus Hinterhäuser, who was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for his work as a pianist, festival director, and cultural manager.

In the performance categories, Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian won for Female Leading Role for her performance in ‘Norma’, while American Michael Spyres won for Best Male Leading Role for his portrayal of Palestrina at the Vienna State Opera. Other winners included Patricia Nolz and Jörg Schneider in supporting roles, Claus Guth for Best Director, and Maxime Pascal for Best Conductor. The Salzburg Festival’s production of ‘Zaide’ was named Best Opera.

In separate cultural news, the Broadway musical ‘The Lion King’ is scheduled to make its Austrian premiere in autumn 2027. The production will be performed in German and will serve as the inaugural show for the newly constructed Theater im Prater, a major cultural project in Vienna featuring approximately 1,800 seats.
