Vienna debates heat protection measures for schools and public spaces
Political representatives in Vienna are debating strategies to combat rising temperatures and protect vulnerable populations. Astrid Pany of the SPÖ highlighted measures to relieve students and educators during heatwaves, including both immediate improvements and long-term structural solutions for school buildings. One such initiative is the ‘Klima-Himmel’ at Corneliusgasse primary school, which uses a green pergola to provide shade where tree planting is not feasible.
In contrast, the Green Party has called for a special city council meeting to demand a more comprehensive heat protection plan. The Greens criticized the current administration for lacking a cohesive strategy following record temperatures, which reached 41 degrees Celsius in parts of Austria. They pointed to the vulnerability of children in schools and patients in hospitals, advocating for long-term climate protection measures such as planting 100,000 new trees in the city.
