Vienna employment rises as older workforce grows

Employment in Vienna increased to 946,692 people in September 2026, representing a 0.6 percent rise compared to the previous year. Data evaluated by the Vienna Employment Promotion Fund (waff) indicates that the growth is driven significantly by older employees.

The number of workers over the age of 55 rose by 5,246 within a year, a 3.2 percent increase. While sectors such as gastronomy and healthcare saw gains, the retail sector experienced a decline in jobs. Vienna Deputy Mayor Barbara Novak noted the increase as a positive signal for economic development amid forecasts of a slight economic recovery.
