Vienna expands Donauinsel waterworks for drinking water reserves

Vienna is expanding its drinking water infrastructure by constructing a new treatment plant at the Donauinsel. The facility is designed to process up to 1,000 liters of water per second to serve as an additional reserve for the city's approximately two million residents.

The project, part of the ‘Wiener Wasser 2050’ strategy, aims to prepare the city for population growth, heatwaves, and the impacts of climate change, as well as to provide security during maintenance of high-mountain spring pipelines. The new plant will utilize groundwater from 17 wells located in the Donauinsel and Nußdorf protection areas. The treatment process will involve several stages, including aeration, coarse and fine filtration, and UV disinfection.
