Vienna expands free cooling zones and cinema attendance spikes amid heat wave

The City of Vienna opened nine of its 37 "Cool Zones" for the weekend of 8‑9 August, providing free, air‑conditioned spaces from 12:00 to 18:00 at locations such as pensioner clubs in the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 16th and 20th districts, the Wien Museum, Erlebnis Europa and others. The initiative targets residents most affected by the ongoing heat wave and offers a climate‑controlled refuge without any purchase requirement.

At the same time, Vienna’s cinemas are experiencing a surge in visitors, with a 15 % rise in attendance across Austria in the first half of the year. Christian Dörfler, president of the Austrian Film Association, attributes the boost to people seeking relief from the heat and to the draw of recent blockbusters such as "Odyssee" and "Spiderman". He notes that even afternoon showings are full, signalling a recovery from pandemic‑related declines in cinema traffic.

Both measures illustrate how the city’s public services and cultural venues are adapting to the extreme temperatures, offering cooling options and capitalising on increased demand for indoor entertainment.
