Vienna expands green tram track network to combat urban heat

Vienna is expanding its network of green tram tracks, adding 600 meters of vegetation to its existing 12-kilometer system by the end of October. The initiative aims to mitigate urban heat, manage rainwater, and improve the local microclimate in densely built areas.

The green tracks utilize various planting methods, including traditional grass, drought-resistant sedum, and permeable concrete elements filled with plants. These installations help absorb rainwater and provide cooling through evaporation, which is particularly beneficial during hot summer days.

New sections are being implemented across several lines, including the extension of Line 18 near the Ernst-Happel Stadium, as well as work on Lines 1, 11, and 71 in areas such as Windtenstraße, Pantucekgasse, and Simmeringer Hauptstraße.
