Vienna expands legal graffiti locations through Wienerwand initiative
The City of Vienna is expanding its 'Wienerwand' initiative, providing new legal locations for graffiti artists to practice their craft without damaging private property. This expansion is a result of the 'Kinder- und Jugendmillion' project, which allows residents under the age of 20 to propose and implement community projects.
Six new locations are being added to the existing network of 23 legal walls. Notable new sites include Resselpark at Karlsplatz, the Donauinsel, and two locations in Floridsdorf at Steinitzsteg and Lorettowiese in Jedlesee. These areas are marked with a characteristic pigeon symbol to identify them as legal spraying zones.
Managed by WIENXTRA, the initiative aims to foster youth participation and allow young people to shape their urban environment. The walls are free to use without prior registration, though users are expected to maintain respect for the space. While older works may be painted over, discriminatory, hateful, or commercial content is strictly prohibited.
