Vienna faces legal disputes over parking fines and restroom fees

Vienna is facing legal and social scrutiny regarding the management of public spaces and the application of local regulations.

A man with a disability was fined 160 euros for parking in his assigned disability spot without displaying his parking permit on the windshield. Although the spot is reserved for his specific vehicle registration, Austrian law requires the permit to be visibly displayed. The ÖAMTC and disability advocates have criticized the rule as impractical, noting that the man may contest the fine through administrative channels.

Separately, the city municipality is facing a lawsuit over gender equality in public restrooms. A 27-year-old woman challenged the system where men can use urinals for free, while women must pay a 50-cent fee to access stalls. While most of Vienna's 168 public toilets are free, 29 locations in high-traffic areas charge for stall access. The legal challenge seeks to address the disparity in available options between genders.
