Vienna Homebase director ignored female‑only transfer rule, 12‑year‑old girl jumped from window

A 12‑year‑old girl, identified as Petra, who had endured repeated sexual abuse, was slated to move to the Homebase care facility in Vienna. Documentation required that only women handle her transfer because of her documented fear of men. Director Gawain Walter of Homebase disregarded the recommendation, entered the girl's room himself, and demanded she open the door. Fearing forced contact, Petra leapt out of a first‑floor window onto concrete, suffering multiple fractures and internal injuries but survived.

The Vienna city youth office investigated the incident and reported no administrative violations. Homebase, which receives public funding, was allocated €386,093 in the same month as the incident.
