Vienna implements AI-powered smart traffic lights

Vienna is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to manage urban traffic through smart traffic lights. Currently, approximately 30 intelligent signaling systems are operational in the Austrian capital, with plans to equip all 200 pedestrian and cyclist button-operated traffic lights with this technology in the coming years.

Developed by the Graz University of Technology, the system uses cameras and sensors to monitor an area of about 30 square meters. The AI analyzes the number of people waiting and identifies specific needs, such as individuals using walking aids, wheelchairs, or strollers. If the system detects that a person with limited mobility requires more time, it automatically extends the green light duration to ensure safe passage.

City officials state that these systems improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and contribute to environmental protection. To address privacy concerns regarding the use of cameras, the city maintains that images are not stored; instead, data processing occurs locally in real-time to identify only necessary information, such as the number and category of people at the crossing.
