Vienna implements AI-powered smart traffic lights

Vienna is expanding its use of artificial intelligence to manage urban traffic, with approximately 30 smart traffic light systems currently operational. This modernization initiative, which began in 2019, aims to make traffic safer, more efficient, and more accessible.

Using cameras and sensors to analyze an area of roughly 30 square meters, these systems can detect the number of people waiting to cross a street. The technology specifically identifies individuals who may require more time to cross, such as those using walking aids, wheelchairs, or strollers. When the system detects these needs, it can automatically extend the green light duration.

The technology was developed by TU Graz, and an improved second generation of the system has been in use in Vienna since December 2024. The city has addressed privacy concerns by stating that images are not stored; instead, data processing occurs locally in real-time to identify categories of people and numbers for optimization purposes. The city plans to equip all pedestrian-button traffic lights with this technology in the coming years.
