Vienna investigates mural discrepancies at Haus zum Goldenen Becher
Authorities in Vienna are investigating the renovation of the Haus zum Goldenen Becher, a building located in the city center adjacent to St. Stephen's Cathedral. Following a renovation project conducted between 2019 and 2025, new murals on the facade have drawn scrutiny for deviating from their historical appearance.
Instead of the original depiction of Rudolf von Habsburg, the murals now feature Arnold of Carinthia as a toddler, alongside altered portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and Duke Leopold. While the private building is not under formal monument protection, it is situated within a protected zone and a UNESCO World Heritage area, where regulations prohibit the alteration of structures and decorative elements.
The building's construction dates back to 1882, and while it was destroyed during World War II, the murals were rediscovered in the 1970s. Following a formal complaint regarding the non-original stylistic elements, the building police are reviewing the legality of the works. The master painter involved has reportedly expressed intent to repay the subsidies received for the murals.
