Vienna launches construction of new Q science communication centre
A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held in Vienna’s first municipal district to mark the start of construction on the Q – Dein Raum für Wissenschaft, a new centre for science communication. The event was attended by Science Minister Eva‑Maria Holzleitner, Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr, BIG CEO Christine Dornaus and Q founder Christopher Lindinger, who presented construction helmets.
The project, managed by the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG), repurposes the historic former aula on Wollzeile into a 4,000 m² venue for exhibitions, workshops and events aimed at young people. It is jointly supported by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the University of Vienna and the Technical University of Vienna, with construction costs estimated at €17 million and completion targeted for spring 2027. Funding comes from the education and science ministries, with future operating costs expected to be partially self‑financed.
