Vienna leads EU capitals in night train connectivity
Vienna has been identified as the leading European capital for night train connectivity. According to an analysis by the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ), the city offers meaningful night train connections to 15 different end destinations, placing it at the top of EU capitals. Of these, 13 destinations are served by daily connections, including major cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw, and Zurich.
In contrast, the VCÖ report highlights a significant gap in the European rail network, noting that only 17 EU capitals are currently accessible via night trains, while ten capitals have no night train connections at all. The organization criticized the EU for failing to prioritize international rail links over recent decades.
Demand for rail travel in Austria is rising, with Statistik Austria reporting a record 4.11 million holiday trips by train in the previous year. Complementing this trend, ÖBB continues to operate services like the Nightjet between Bregenz and Vienna, utilizing updated second-generation rolling stock that includes various cabin options.
