Vienna logistics experts call for affordable urban transshipment spaces
Logistics experts in Vienna are calling for the proactive designation of affordable urban logistics spaces and transshipment hubs to ensure the city's supply chain functions effectively. Jürgen Bauer, chairman of the Freight Forwarding and Logistics group at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes that while parcel boxes are useful for the final stage of delivery, they do not address the broader needs of the logistics chain.
Bauer notes that large-scale shipments—including furniture, white goods, construction materials, and catering supplies—require significant transshipment and maneuvering areas. He argues that logistics should be integrated into urban planning, particularly in major development areas like Neu-Marx, to prevent essential services from being pushed to the outskirts.
Currently, logistics operations occupy only about five percent of Vienna's operational zones. Industry representatives suggest that securing areas such as the Danube and harbor axes, as well as large industrial zones in Donaustadt and southern Vienna, is vital for maintaining the infrastructure necessary for trade, construction, and general urban supply.
