Vienna lost property service returns 100,000 euros to pensioner
A German pensioner has had 100,000 euros returned to him after forgetting a backpack containing the cash on a train at Vienna's Main Station. The individual, who was in transit through the Austrian capital, intended to use the funds as a down payment for real estate.
Authorities at the Vienna Lost Property Service, known as MA 48, were able to identify the owner using banking documents found inside the bag. Sandra Holzinger, a spokesperson for the service, stated that the owner was “extremely grateful and happy” upon retrieving the money.
The MA 48 service processes approximately 126,000 items annually. In 2025, the service successfully returned over 57,000 items to their owners, including wallets, bags, and mobile phones. Items are held for seven months; those remaining are either sold in the ‘48er-Tandler’ shop for humanitarian purposes or auctioned via Dorotheum.
