Vienna markets offer cheaper produce than Budapest despite higher Austrian wages
A comparison of food prices reveals that certain fruits and vegetables are significantly cheaper at markets in Vienna than in Budapest, despite Austrian average salaries being roughly twice as high as those in Hungary.
At Viennese markets, items such as tomatoes, peaches, and bell peppers were found to cost around 700 HUF per kilogram, while grapes were available for approximately 400 HUF. Specific prices included capia peppers between 550–950 HUF, zucchini at 700–750 HUF, and plums at 500–600 HUF. In contrast, prices at Budapest’s Bosnyák Square were often one and a half to two times higher, with capia peppers reaching up to 2,500 HUF.
Potential reasons for this discrepancy include differences in supply chains. Producers suggest that Viennese vendors may have more direct connections to international markets, reducing the number of intermediaries. In Hungary, higher costs are attributed to wholesaler and retailer margins, a 27 percent VAT, and credit card transaction fees. However, the price advantage in Austria does not apply to all categories; meat prices in Austrian discount stores were noted to be higher than in Budapest.
