Vienna Mayor cancels proposed cultural ticket surcharge
Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig has scrapped the proposed ‘Kultur-Euro’, a planned surcharge on cultural and event tickets intended to secure long-term financing for the city’s arts infrastructure. In a social media statement, Ludwig announced the decision followed a thorough evaluation of various arguments and intense criticism.
The proposal had sparked significant backlash from the cultural sector and political opposition. The Austrian Event Industry Association (IGÖV) had labeled a potential 12.5 percent surcharge a ‘punitive tax,’ warning that increased ticket prices could deter audiences and place undue pressure on organizers and artists. Additionally, Matthias Naske, Director of the Vienna Konzerthaus, described the plan as an ‘existential threat’ to institutions.
Political parties also weighed in on the matter. The Vienna ÖVP had issued an open letter demanding the cancellation of the levy, while the Vienna Greens welcomed the decision to withdraw the plan. The discussions also involved federal government representatives, as the regulation could have impacted federal cultural institutions within the city.
