Austria commemorates victims of 2020 Vienna terror attack

Austrian officials gathered at Desider-Friedmann-Platz to mark the sixth anniversary of the 2020 Islamist terror attack in downtown Vienna. The ceremony included wreath-laying by high-ranking figures, including Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, and Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig.

The 2020 attack, carried out by a lone Islamist perpetrator, resulted in the deaths of four people and left 23 others injured. During the commemoration, officials discussed ongoing improvements to victim support and security measures. Interior Minister Karner noted that the attack led to significant developments in police organization and constitutional protection services.

In separate commemorative events, officials in Graz and Vienna also held ceremonies to honor victims of National Socialism and Austro-fascism. These events emphasized the importance of defending democracy, human rights, and social cohesion against modern extremism and hatred.
