Vienna museum attributes anonymous portrait to Gian Lorenzo Bernini

An anonymous portrait held in the storage of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has been newly attributed to the Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The work, titled ‘Portrait of an Old Man’, has remained out of public view since 1989 due to uncertain attribution.

Curator Gudrun Swoboda led the research, noting that the painting’s technique mimics sculptural modeling, treating the facial features as if they were worked from clay. This stylistic connection to Bernini’s renowned sculpture is further supported by comparisons to the artist’s known self-portrait and the anatomical rendering of the subject's features.

The attribution is significant because Bernini, primarily known as a sculptor and architect, left behind a very small corpus of paintings, with fewer than 20 works securely attributed to him. The piece is expected to be a centerpiece of the ‘Bernini—Painter and Sculptor’ exhibition, scheduled to run from December 2, 2026, to April 4, 2027, at the Palais Lobkowitz.
