Vienna officials propose restrictions on smart glasses
Political parties SPÖ and NEOS in Vienna have introduced a resolution calling on the Austrian federal government to examine potential bans on smart glasses in specific public settings. The proposal aims to establish a clear legal framework to address privacy concerns arising from camera-equipped eyewear.
Key locations identified for potential restrictions include public transportation, government offices, and schools. Proponents of the measure argue that unlike smartphones, smart glasses can record video or audio without being immediately obvious to bystanders, creating a risk of covert surveillance.
In the educational sector, officials expressed concern that teachers and students could be subjected to unauthorized filming or eavesdropping. The resolution also suggests that the use of such devices should require the explicit consent of those being recorded and proposes changes to how the burden of proof is handled in privacy disputes.
