Vienna police arrest man after partner found dead in stairwell

Vienna police have arrested a 40-year-old Romanian man following the death of his 35-year-old partner in the Landstraße district. The woman was discovered unresponsive in the stairwell of an apartment building on Hohlweggasse near the mailboxes.

Emergency responders attempted resuscitation, but the woman could not be saved. Investigators noted visible injuries and bruising on her body, suggesting blunt force trauma. The suspect, who was present during the medical intervention, was detained after exhibiting suspicious behavior toward officers. He has reportedly admitted to using blunt force during a domestic dispute.

The victim, an Eastern European national, had no official residency registration in Austria and was believed to have been part of the homeless community. She had been living with the suspect since the summer after meeting him at the Hauptbahnhof. The Vienna State Office of Criminal Investigation is continuing the probe, pending autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.
