Vienna police dismantle drug ring in multi-day raid

Between August 26 and 28, 2026, police in Vienna conducted a series of operations targeting a suspected drug trafficking group. The investigation began when officers from the Street Crime Combat Group (EGS) observed a bag being exchanged between two men in the Simmering district.

Following the observation, police intercepted a taxi carrying a 27-year-old Algerian national. During his arrest, the suspect resisted and caused minor injuries to two officers. A search of the bag revealed approximately 8.5 kilograms of marijuana. A 33-year-old Austrian national involved in the exchange was also detained.

Subsequent searches of an apartment led to the detention of four additional Austrian men, aged 33 and 36. Authorities seized an additional 4.3 kilograms of marijuana and 61 grams of cocaine from the residence. In total, the operation resulted in the seizure of nearly 13 kilograms of marijuana, 61 grams of cocaine, small amounts of methamphetamine, and several thousand euros in cash.

A separate arrest of a 25-year-old Syrian national, who was already wanted, led to further complications. During a search prior to his transfer to the Vienna-Josefstadt prison, the man attempted to reach for a loaded pistol concealed in his underwear. Officers successfully prevented him from using the weapon and confiscated the firearm. Investigations are ongoing.
