Vienna proposes strict abuse prevention rules for sports clubs

The City of Vienna is planning to implement stricter regulations to prevent child abuse within sports clubs. Under a proposed code of honor, all individuals working with minors—including trainers and officials, whether employed or volunteering—would be required to submit a criminal record certificate specifically for child and youth welfare.

To ensure ongoing compliance, these certificates must be renewed every three years. Failure to adhere to these standards could result in the loss of municipal sports funding, as compliance is a central criterion for Vienna's sports subsidies. The initiative, supported by City Councilor Peter Hacker and prompted by local representatives, aims to create a more robust safety net for children in athletic environments.

The proposal has sparked debate regarding the potential bureaucratic burden and costs. Estimates suggest tens of thousands of people in Vienna would be affected, as individuals may need to cover the costs of obtaining these documents periodically. Critics have also raised concerns about the effectiveness of such measures in preventing offenders from moving between different clubs.
