Vienna pushes ahead with 85 million euro Liesingbach river renaturation

Work on the Liesingbach renaturation in Vienna's 23rd district is progressing. The current construction phase (Bauteil 2) between Atzergersdorfer Platz and Gutheil‑Schoder‑Gasse has seen 2.3 km of a new rain‑water canal completed, part of a total 2.8 km built using underground drilling to limit noise and dust. The project, launched in 2020, aims to restore a more natural river course, improve flood protection and raise water quality. Around 400 heat‑tolerant trees and over 600 native shrubs are being planted, and a “floating green” area at Steinsee will host climbing plants for additional shading. The initiative is jointly funded by the City of Vienna and the federal government, with total costs of roughly €85 million, including over €1 million earmarked for water‑engineering works. Environment Minister Norbert Totschnig highlighted the dual benefits of enhanced water quality and new recreational spaces for residents.
