Vienna restaurants increasingly charge for tap water

A survey conducted by the Arbeiterkammer (AK) in tourist areas of Vienna reveals that free tap water has become a rarity in the local gastronomy sector. Out of 30 establishments sampled, only three provided tap water free of charge, even when customers ordered food or other beverages.

Prices for 0.5 liters of tap water in Viennese restaurants ranged from 0.80 to 3.60 euros. Compared to a 2014 survey, the average price for half a liter has increased by 47.5 percent, rising from 1.39 euros to 2.05 euros, while inflation during the same period rose by 44 percent.

The Arbeiterkammer is calling for tap water to remain free when guests order meals or other drinks, noting that the cost of 1,000 liters of tap water is only approximately 2.27 euros. In response to rising costs, the gastronomy industry has previously argued that water prices must account for additional overhead, including energy, wages, and rent.
