Vienna schools see shift as Muslim students outnumber Christians

New data from the Austrian Integration Fund reveals significant demographic shifts in Vienna's educational system. For the first time, Muslim students have become more numerous than those from Christian communities in Vienna's primary schools, accounting for 39% to 42% of the student population compared to 31% to 33.3% for Christians. In secondary schools, the proportion of Muslim students reaches approximately 49%.

Language proficiency and citizenship are also key factors in these demographic changes. In Vienna, nearly 48.9% of students in state primary schools do not speak German at home. Nationally, over 20% of primary school students hold foreign citizenship, a significant increase from 9.2% in the 2006/07 school year.

To address language gaps, the Austrian parliament has approved measures effective from 2027. Students under 15 with insufficient German skills will face a reduction in summer holidays, replacing two weeks of vacation with intensive language instruction to improve academic performance and integration.
