Vienna senior home residents given incorrect medication

Twenty residents at the Haus Leopoldau senior facility in Vienna were given incorrect medication over an extended period, according to the operator, Fonds Kuratorium Wiener Pensionisten-Wohnhäuser (KWP).

The errors included administering medications at the wrong time of day, providing drugs that had already been discontinued, and in some instances, providing incorrect dosages or unprescribed medications. The management has attributed the incidents to “personal failure.”

In response, the facility's director and the ambulance team leader have been suspended, with further disciplinary actions expected. While most affected residents are reported to be in good health, lab tests are being conducted for two individuals to ensure no long-term health consequences exist.

To prevent future errors, an additional layer of oversight has been introduced at Haus Leopoldau, requiring every single medication to undergo a secondary check to restore standard quality management protocols.
