Vienna Southern Route rail disruptions extended following Railjet accident

Rail traffic disruptions on the Vienna Southern Route between Meidling and Liesing are expected to last longer than initially anticipated following a Railjet accident at Hetzendorf station. The incident occurred after a train struck metal parts on the tracks. Preliminary investigations by ÖBB suggest the debris was not placed there maliciously but likely originated from a nearby recycling facility where it was moved by a crane.

Repair work on the damaged tracks is ongoing. While local traffic is operating with limited capacity on a single track, long-distance services are being rerouted via the Pottendorf Line. Specifically, CJX9 line services are currently restricted to operating between Wiener Neustadt Main Station and Payerbach-Reichenau.

Commuters are advised to expect delays of up to 20 minutes and isolated cancellations. While initial estimates suggested repairs would conclude by Tuesday or Wednesday, updated projections indicate disruptions may continue until Thursday afternoon.
