Vienna Stock Exchange ATX drops as Middle East tensions lift oil prices
The Vienna Stock Exchange saw the ATX index decline on two trading days amid heightened Middle East conflict. On Monday the ATX fell 1.2% to 6,075.32 points, and on Wednesday it slipped another 0.71% to 6,096.17 points, while the ATX Prime lost 1.17%.
The downturn was linked to renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, which kept investors cautious. At the same time, Brent crude rose sharply, with prices climbing above $97 a barrel.
Company‑specific moves included Voestalpine reporting strong year‑end results, Strabag gaining 1.2% after announcing a €490 million Australian contract, and insurance firms such as Vienna Insurance Group and UNIQA seeing modest declines or gains. In the banking sector, Raiffeisen Bank International raised its offer for Addiko Bank, prompting a competitive bid from Slovenia’s Nova Ljubljanska Bank, which increased its proposal to €33.50 per share.
Overall, the Austrian market reflected a mix of sectoral gains and broader risk aversion driven by geopolitical and commodity price developments.
