Austrian stock markets and European indices face declines
The Austrian stock market, led by the ATX index, closed lower on Tuesday, dropping approximately 0.8% to 6,452.99 points. While initial losses were sharp, the decline was somewhat mitigated toward the end of the session. Market volatility was driven by concerns regarding the technology sector, specifically potential corrections in AI-related stocks, and rising oil prices. Brent crude briefly approached $112 per barrel due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz before settling lower.
In the banking sector, BAWAG and RBI saw declines, influenced by a weak European environment for bank stocks and uncertainties regarding BAWAG’s planned acquisition of Ireland’s PTSB. Conversely, Steyr Motors shares surged 20% following a voluntary takeover bid from the US drone developer Red Cat Holdings, offering €39 per share in cash.
European markets also showed weakness, with the STOXX 50 index falling by 0.20%. In Russia, a court in Kaliningrad ruled in favor of a Strabag shareholder, ordering Raiffeisen Bank Russia and certain Austrian Strabag shareholders to pay €342 million in damages.
