Vienna Takes Permanent Custody of Srebrenica Memorial

The City of Vienna signed a donation deed to permanently assume ownership and maintenance of the "Cvijet Srebrenice" monument placed in front of the United Nations headquarters. By adding the memorial to Vienna’s public monument register, the city guarantees its long‑term preservation and public visibility, underscoring European responsibility for remembering the 1995 Srebrenica genocide.

The step follows a 2022 Austrian National Council resolution on Srebrenica remembrance, an initiative driven by the Consilium Bosniacum association of Bosnian‑Herzegovinian groups in Austria. The monument, designed as a walk‑through pavilion with a stylised flower and eleven abstract female figures representing survivors and victims' families, was unveiled with Bosnian Presidency members, Austrian and Bosnian ministers, diplomats and civil‑society representatives in attendance.
