Vienna to build new 22 million euro waste facility in Ottakring
Vienna is set to construct a new waste management facility in the Ottakring district to improve local recycling and circular economy infrastructure. The project, managed by MA 48, is expected to cost approximately 22 million euros.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2027, with a planned completion date in September 2028. The new site will be located near the existing facility on Kendlerstraße. The new center will offer more than double the waste collection capacity of the current site, featuring sunken, covered bins designed for easy access by pedestrians, cargo bikes, and cars.
Key features of the new facility include free compost for residents and a ‘48er-Tandler’ box, which allows for the reuse of functional goods. The building will also incorporate ecological elements such as a green roof, green facades, and a photovoltaic system to support its own energy needs. The existing site will remain operational throughout the construction period to ensure continuous waste disposal services for the community.
