Vienna to equip 200 traffic lights with AI technology

Vienna is implementing an artificial intelligence system to upgrade approximately 200 push-button traffic lights for pedestrians and cyclists. Since 2019, the city has been gradually integrating these intelligent controllers, with about 30 already in operation. Recent installations include the first AI-enabled light in Floridsdorf at the intersection of Donaufelder Straße, Theodor-Körner-Gasse, and Plankenbüchlergasse.

The system utilizes cameras and sensors to monitor a 30-square-meter area around the crossing. The AI analyzes the number of people waiting and determines who intends to cross. To improve inclusivity and safety, the software can identify specific needs; for example, if it detects wheelchairs, strollers, or walking aids, it can automatically extend the green light phase to allow more time for crossing.

While authorities from Magistrat 33 state the technology improves environmental factors, traffic flow, and safety, the rollout has raised data privacy concerns. Developers have noted that camera images are typically deleted within 50 milliseconds, processing only the count and categories of people to optimize traffic patterns, though critics remain concerned about potential surveillance.
