Vienna to phase out multiprofessional school teams by 2026

The City of Vienna is restructuring psychosocial support in its compulsory schools by phasing out its multiprofessional teams at the end of the 2025/26 school year. This decision marks a shift toward relying on the federal “Chancenbonus” (Chance Bonus) starting in the 2026/27 school year.

As of June 2025, the existing program employed 46 staff members (11 full-time and 35 part-time) across 29 locations, totaling 34.5 full-time equivalents. The initiative originally aimed to establish 17 teams across 52 locations to benefit approximately 15,000 children.

The federal Chance Bonus model is expected to provide an annual budget of 65 million euros, aiming to create up to 800 additional full-time equivalents at 400 schools nationwide. However, critics have raised concerns regarding potential gaps in service continuity and the security of psychosocial care for students during this transition period.
