Germany and Austria report traffic warnings and childcare policy changes

Germany faces significant traffic disruptions as summer holidays end in several states, including Saxony, Thuringia, and Schleswig-Holstein. The ADAC warns of massive congestion, particularly on Sunday during return travel. In Bavaria, the lifting of the weekend truck driving ban for vehicles over 7.5 tons—intended to facilitate the transport of critical goods like raw materials and energy—is expected to further intensify road traffic.

In education and childcare, new developments are occurring in both Germany and Austria. In Vienna, a new regulation starting in September ensures that children with municipal full-day kindergarten placements will not lose them if their parents enter parental leave or face temporary unemployment. City Councilor Bettina Emmerling stated the goal is to provide security for families.

Meanwhile, Bavaria is preparing for a new legal entitlement to full-day care for first-graders. However, the Bavarian Teachers' Association has warned of potential bottlenecks, including shortages in high-quality pedagogical offerings and physical space for meals, which may impact older children in primary schools.
