Vienna to release controversial ‘Auszeit-WG’ youth facility concept
Vienna City Councilor Bettina Emmerling (NEOS) has announced that the full concept for the controversial ‘Auszeit-WG’—a residential facility for minor intensive offenders—will be published shortly. The decision follows significant criticism from experts and professionals regarding the facility's operational framework.
Previously, a 17-page document from the provider had been subject to scrutiny. Forensic child and youth psychiatrist Patrick Frottier had identified ‘serious professional deficiencies’ in the existing paperwork. Emmerling described the facility as an ‘ultima ratio,’ intended to be used only after all other measures have been exhausted. She also called on the Ministry of Justice to establish uniform nationwide legal regulations.
In addition to the residential project, Emmerling announced plans to accelerate heat protection measures in Viennese kindergartens and schools. Starting next school year, the use of mobile air conditioning units and fans will be facilitated to combat rising temperatures.
