Vienna U1 subway fire investigation implicates maintenance failures
A federal investigation report regarding the November 2024 U1 subway fire in Vienna suggests that the incident might have been preventable. The Federal Safety Investigation Authority (SUB) found indications that insulation damage to wiring, which caused a short circuit and subsequent fire, could have been detected during maintenance conducted shortly before the event.
The report also notes that a circuit breaker intended to interrupt the short circuit failed to trip, potentially due to maintenance deficiencies. However, because the breaker was destroyed in the fire, the SUB could not provide direct evidence of such failures.
Wiener Linien has rejected the allegations of negligence. The fire, which occurred between the Taubstummengasse and Hauptbahnhof stations, resulted in five minor injuries and property damage exceeding 14 million euros.
