Vienna university building heat supply analysis reveals inefficiencies
A master's thesis by Benedikt Strößenreuther analyzes the heat supply of the Türkenwirt building at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna to identify opportunities for sustainable energy use.
Despite a design priority for heat pumps and solar thermal energy, the analysis found that district heating accounts for 71% of the heat supply, while heat pumps provide only 21% and solar thermal energy provides 8%. The study identifies the lack of middle temperature stratification in the heat storage system as the primary cause of inefficiency. This issue leads to frequent cycling of the heat pump and inconsistent temperature levels between the flow and return pipes.
