Vienna withdraws funding from four private kindergarten operators
The City of Vienna has terminated funding agreements with four additional private kindergarten operators, affecting five locations and approximately 450 childcare places. This follows a previous decision in February to withdraw funding from eight operators across 13 locations, which impacted 760 children.
According to the city's kindergarten department, MA 10, the cancellations are linked to various “billing-relevant or financial aspects” identified during audits. While specific names of the operators have not been released due to ongoing proceedings, the city has indicated a more rigorous approach to preventing the misuse of subsidies since 2023. This crackdown follows reports of irregularities, including instances where funds were allegedly used for non-educational expenses.
Officials noted that the termination of funding agreements does not necessarily mean the loss of childcare places, as private providers with valid operating permits may continue to run facilities without municipal subsidies. Political figures, including ÖVP's Harald Zierfuß, have called for greater transparency regarding the specific associations and circumstances involved in these cases.
