Vienna’s Penzing District Demands Opening of Kendlerpark Green Space

The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) in the Penzing district of Vienna launched a summer campaign titled “We want the Kendlerpark!” to press the city to open a fenced‑off green area near the U3 Kendlerstraße station. The party says the site was rezoned for a private developer in 2020 with a contractual promise to create a public park by 2024, a commitment that has not been fulfilled.

KPÖ activists began door‑to‑door outreach on July 29, 2026, and set up information stands to collect signatures for a petition to the district council. They call for the immediate removal of the fences for interim community use and for the city to enforce the original agreement so the area can serve as a neighborhood meeting place and playground.

District spokesperson Lena Coufal warned that converting valuable green space into “concrete gold” would be a scandal, especially amid climate concerns.
