Viet Duc Hospital staff facilitate organ donation after family dispute
Medical professionals at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi successfully navigated a difficult family situation to facilitate organ donation from a 25-year-old man declared brain dead following a serious traffic accident. While the patient's father and sister initially agreed to the donation, the mother strongly opposed the decision and insisted on taking her son home.
After the patient was discharged to follow the mother's wishes, a relative intervened to help resolve the psychological distress and convince her of the decision. The mother eventually agreed to return the patient to the hospital, allowing for timely medical intervention to preserve the organs for transplant recipients.
Medical staff highlighted the immense difficulty of organ donation advocacy, noting that timely intervention is critical to prevent organ failure and ensure the opportunity to save others is not lost.
