Hong Kong inspector arrested over 33 million HKD lottery dispute

Hong Kong police have arrested a 36-year-old inspector from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) for suspected theft involving a Mark Six lottery windfall.

The incident stems from a group of 15 colleagues who pooled their money to purchase tickets for the 50th anniversary Snowball draw on September 5. The group won approximately 33 million HKD in prizes. The arrested inspector, who was responsible for managing the group's betting through his personal account, allegedly refused to distribute the winnings according to the original agreement.

Reports indicate the suspect demanded to keep 10 million HKD for himself, claiming his role in managing the complex bet entitled him to a larger share. After failed negotiations with colleagues on September 9, the suspect reportedly went missing from work. Following a police investigation, the man was arrested in the Western District on September 11 and has since been released on bail, with a requirement to report to police in mid-October.
