Vietnam accelerates 5G leadership and prepares for 6G rollout

Vietnam has emerged as one of the world’s top countries for 5G coverage, with about 2,500 domestic 5G base stations accounting for roughly 6 % of the total network. Mobile broadband speeds have reached 210.85 Mbps, placing Vietnam ninth globally, while IPv6 adoption has risen to 67 %, second in Southeast Asia. Vietnamese telecom firms now design, produce and commercialise 5G equipment that meets international standards, shortening the development cycle from eight years for 4G to under two years for 5G.

The government is fast‑tracking the next generation, establishing a 6G Steering Committee under the Ministry of Science and Technology and setting a target to trial a 6G network by 2028, with commercial deployment expected from 2029. Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group will lead early trials and contribute to global standard‑setting. Parallel digital‑transformation measures include a new high‑tech park in Hung Yen, expanded semiconductor ambitions, and streamlined e‑visa and electronic identity services for foreign residents.
